Statins for Primary Cardiovascular Prevention
Statin therapy in patients without cardiovascular disease reduces the risk of major coronary and cerebrovascular events, according to the authors of a recent meta-analysis (Arch Intern Med 2006;166:2307-2313). The analysis included seven randomised controlled trials of statin therapy with a total of 42,848 patients, 90% of whom had no history of cardiovascular disease.

Environment causes disease

Strategy to fight tuberculosis

According to a new report by the WHO, up to almost one quarter of disease globally is caused by avoidable environmental exposures. Moreover, more than one third of disease in children aged under 5 years is caused by environmental exposure - such as diarrhoeal disease. The report, Preventing Disease through Healthy Environments , is available on the WHO website   ( www.who.int ).

The WHO has launched a new strategy to fight tuberculosis (TB) and reduce the 1.5 million deaths caused by this disease each year. The `Stop TB Strategy' aims to scale up TB control activities and address the spread of TB and HIV co-infection and multi-drug resistant TB. Further information can be found in the 18-24 March 2006 issue of The Lancet.

Dramatic decline in measles deaths

In other news from the WHO, and from UNICEF, global deaths due to measles feel by 48%, from 871,000 in 1999 to an estimated 450,000 in 2004. Major national immunization activities around the world and better access to routine childhood immunization were responsible for this reduction.
